Job VC
Senior Data Engineer – Products and API
Technologies
Description
About the Role
At Dreamlines, we help travelers find and book their dream cruise — working with the world's leading cruise lines across Germany, the UK, Australia, and the Netherlands.
Our team (10+ engineers) already has a solid foundation: warehouse, ingestion layer, and ETL pipelines are in good shape. Now we're building the next layer — the one customers and business teams actually interact with. Data products, APIs, predictive analytics, and AI-powered features that move the business from "here's what happened" to "here's what you should do next."
This role is for someone who builds that layer. Not pipelines for their own sake — but data products that get used, make decisions, and ship.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
Building data products end-to-end.
Predictive support-load dashboards, automated package optimization based on competitor data, ship-level complaint signals that feed sales decisions — you'll take these from concept to production.
Designing and maintaining the serving layer.
APIs, feature delivery, real-time data products built on top of our Redshift warehouse — you own this layer and collaborate with data engineers who own what's beneath it.
Owning reliability after deployment.
You monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize what you ship — freshness, performance, and uptime are part of the job, not someone else's problem.
Integrating LLMs into real workflows.
We use Claude (Anthropic) and expect pragmatic judgment on when to use prompt engineering, when RAG is the right call, and when fine-tuning actually makes sense. No experimentation for its own sake.
Testing and validating before you ship.
New data products and AI features go through proper validation — with attention to baseline metrics and downstream impact — before they touch production.
Moving us toward predictive and prescriptive analytics.
We want to go beyond look-back reporting. You'll help define what that looks like architecturally and then build it.
Contributing to our real-time roadmap.
We're early in our streaming journey — you'll have genuine input on direction, not just implementation.
Being a technical reference point on the team.
You'll be the go-to voice on data product architecture and LLM integration — shaping how the team thinks about these topics, not just executing tasks.
What You Won't Be Doing
Managing a team or handling people leadership
Pure ETL/pipeline work — we have engineers for that
Academic ML research or model experimentation without a production target
You Must Have
5+ years building data-intensive applications end-to-end — not only pipelines
Strong Python; comfortable in JavaScript/TypeScript when the serving layer needs it
Strong SQL and hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse (Redshift preferred)
Experience designing and shipping REST APIs that serve production systems
Practical LLM integration experience in production — with real judgment on the tradeoffs
At least one customer-facing or business-critical data product shipped end-to-end
Hands-on experience with dbt — able to read, extend, and propose changes to models
Full professional proficiency in English
Strongly Preferred
Exposure to Airbyte, Airflow, and BI tools such as Tableau
Frontend competence sufficient to ship a usable internal dashboard independently
Ability to document architecture and data product behavior clearly — for both technical and business audiences
Strong architectural judgment and ability to translate business needs into shipped products
Willingness to push back constructively when the data doesn't support a requirement
Nice to Have
Experience with streaming / real-time systems (Kafka, Debezium, Materialize, RisingWave, or similar)
Background in e-commerce, travel, or marketplace businesses
Experience building agentic LLM workflows in production
Familiarity with GDPR and EU data residency constraints
What You Get
A high-impact role on a platform used by thousands of customers
No time tracking
A supportive and experienced engineering team
Internal learning and development program
20 vacation days
Medical care & wellbeing
Accounting support
Office gym with a personal trainer
Family-friendly space
