About RouteGenie
We’re a SaaS platform for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), used by 700+ transportation providers across the US. We’re scaling fast, modernizing a mature platform (Django + PostgreSQL),and executing a multi-tenant migration that will reshape how we run software. We need a hands-on engineering leader to make that happen.
About the role
You’ll be the technical and people leader for our 25+ engineer organization, reporting to the Head of Technology. This is not a coding-first job — but you should still be able to drop into a Django codebase to diagnose a production issue or validate an architectural call when the team needs it. You’ll own engineering execution, technical standards, and team health across a distributed team in the US and Europe.
What you’ll do
Technical leadership (30%)
— Partner with the Head of Technology on architecture and strategy — with real depth in Python/Django and PostgreSQL
— Own our technical standards: code review, testing, API design, security posture
— Lead design reviews and build-vs-buy decisions
Engineering management (30%)
— Directly manage our Backend, Frontend, and QA leads; coach them and grow their people
— Run the performance cycle: goals, 1:1s, feedback, reviews
— Hire, onboard, and retain strong engineers — and make hard calls when needed
— Lead across time zones with strong async practices
Delivery partnership (20%)
Work with the Delivery Manager on sprint planning, estimation, and risk
— Balance feature work with tech debt and infrastructure
Platform & operations (20%)
— Own production reliability: incident response, postmortems, operational readiness
— Partner with DevOps on CI/CD and developer experience
— Keep our engineering HIPAA-compliant
What you bring
— 8+ years in software engineering, with 5+ managing through leads or senior engineers
— 2+ years leading distributed/remote teams across time zones
— Expert-level Python and Django in production SaaS
— Deep PostgreSQL experience — tuning, schema design, migrations at scale
— Strong grasp of OWASP Top 10; familiarity with HIPAA and/or SOC 2
— Excellent written and spoken English (B2+)
— Comfort operating with high autonomy and direct accountability
Nice to have
— Experience leading a major platform re-architecture or SaaS migration
— Background in NEMT, logistics, transportation, or healthcare SaaS
— Working knowledge of TypeScript/Angular for architecture alignment
